The BeeweebUSA story In 2001 Grason started working on a system which would allow clients of our Remote Internet Services division to share files (1) internally (i.e., between branch offices, store locations, and with work-at-home employees) and (2) with vendors, outside sales reps, or other 3rd-party relationships. We had found early versions of Beeweeb in the open source and shareware websites but were unsure that it was commercial-grade. At that time, we decided to start development on web-based file manager which could be used by ASP's, Corporate IT departments, and small business users. And, yes, be available to Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Macintosh users. Unfortunately, my development partner in the the web-file system ran into a programming problem which he took a short-cut to resolve -- he wrote a Windows DLL, which now meant that the product could only run on Windows and would have a higher cost of maintenance and support. So, we went back to the drawing boards, re-visited the Internet and found that Beeweeb had evolved into a Version 2 release and was still actively being posted to shareware sites. We downloaded Windows and Linux copies and started testing. And testing. And testing. And, when we were convinced that the product was really as stable as we had hoped for, we sent a note the the VP of Sales asking about reselling it in the USA and Canada. Emails and telephone calls started to flow across the Atlantic Ocean and six timezones; versions of agreements were exchanged; and at an all-day meeting with Enrico Donati, the genius behind Beeweeb and the Managing Director, around Thanksgiving 2002, we made concrete plans to bring Beeweeb to the Americas and give it the local presence it needed. So, BeeweebUSA was born at an restaurant in Stamford, CT like the story about Compaq Computer and lots of other computer businesses in the past 15 years. But that was 2002 and this is 2006, and things have changed.
